Radial Menus - Are You Using Them?

It was three days into playing Odyssey before I realized I'd not yet seen a single radial menu. This was such a big selling point of the new expansion that I started to wonder why I wasn't seeing the new feature.

The escape/options window told the story. I had the radial menu set to middle mouse button clicks. Since I rarely click the middle button (only roll it for scrolling and zooming), that explained its absence.

So I mapped the radial menu to my left mouse button. Which quickly annoyed me. When rotating my camera, if the mouse click that begins the rotation starts on an object (such as a station), then the radial menu popped up instead. And yes, I realize I could have set a radial menu delay, but I generally don't like delays. If I really need to use a feature (in EVE a lot of situations are emergency situations), then I don't want to wait out a delay, because that's a server tick wasted.

So I remapped my radial menu back to the middle mouse button.

I've used the radial menu maybe four or five times since then. Not really because I had too, but because I wanted to. I really do quite like the design and implementation of the new menu, but activating it is not particularly efficient for my gameplay. I still work mainly off the overview, the watchlist, and the broadcast window. I also do a lot of right-clicking in empty space (to warp and align to stargates, stations, planets, belts, bookmarks, etc.) Right-click menus are still far more convenient for me currently.

Maybe I'll try mapping the radial menu to my right mouse button. See how that works out. I expect that I'll get the familiar right-click menu when no radial menu is available (such as right clicking empty space), and I'll get the radial menu where appropriate. Which might work out perfectly for me. I'll report again, if this ends up being the perfect solution.

I do quite like the new menu, so I'm going to figure out how to integrate it into my gameplay without its activation being distracting or annoying. The radial menu fits into the HUD design very well, and it has very HUD-like qualities. I think with a bit of practice, it'll be far quicker to work with the radial menu than with the older right-click menus that it replaces.
