How To Be a 10B ISK Dummkopf
Now, I know that I can't dock a neutral alt into a sovereignty-controlled station, such as the Gents station in TVN or the Goons station in VFK. I know this. I was thinking about it last night. It's why I ended my freighter run in lowsec, one jump from B-DBYQ in Cloud Ring.
All that knowing didn't stop me from forgetting it all today, in my excitement over a couple things. You get excited about a thing, you sometimes forget all the don'ts associated with what you're excited about.
A fleet I wanted to be on was happening later in the evening. The ships I needed were sitting one jump away. Someone contracted Poetic a cyno ship for some weird reason (didn't ask for it, don't know the dude who contracted it), so I now had a way to get those ships where I needed them. I was excited about all three.
That is how I ended up jumping my neutral freighter alt into B-D, a station with thirty CFC on the undock, and then quickly learned what I already knew, that I couldn't dock.
I shit a brick. And then another. I immediately hit ESC, and quit out of the game. No one had targeted me yet. I had one minute to survive if any of the thirty or so people on the undock took notice. I watched from Poetic, locked into position outside station due to cynoing, hands shaking, waiting. Nobody was attacking the freighter. And then the jump freighter warped off.
I was not out of the woods yet. I was coming back from 1DH-SX in Delve with Tengus and Caracals. I'd planned for a mostly full cargo, so had just enough isotopes to make the trip there and back. I'd already checked the availability of isotopes in B-D, and was planning to restock in station. Prices were actually cheaper in B-D than in Black Rise.
So I was in a position where I was unable to dock, and I did not have enough isotopes to jump out of system. I was truly fucked.
I got on jabber to talk to Gents, explain my gigantic error. Gents are aces, because they came to my assistance pronto. A fleet was formed. A POS was made available. I logged back on, jumped into fleet, got the POS password typed in. I landed on station. About thirty Gents locked me up, applied webs, I started warping to the fleet member in the POS. No CFC interfered. Safe. Another dude came by and dropped me a can of isotopes. I jumped the hell out of B-D none the worse for wear. The aderenalin was still pumping, the hands still shaking a bit, but nothing lost.
This was supposed to be a post about my first jump into nullsec. Back when I picked up my ships in 1DH. How I was becoming much more comfortable with the jump freighter. Setting proper cynos. That sort of thing. I have about 20 or so successful jumps under my belt now.
That's not what the post is about now. I suppose a giant potential fuck-up is better reading anyhow. Some folks in Gents suggested I frame this little story as "Goons so bad, cannot lock up neutral jump freighter sitting on their undock." I don't want to antagonize them though. I'll never make the mistake again, of course, but why ruin it for the next guy who makes the same mistake.
Probably the only thing that saved me is all the freighter and carrier traffic landing on station currently. Every freighter is probably assumed to be a friendly, as long as not orange or red. That's what saved my ass. Without a major deployment happening into this very station, I would have certainly been dead and very sad.
