A Message From Goonswarm - Re: Recent Service Interruptions

A public service announcement from Solo Drakban to all CFC members, received just a couple hours ago. I have already changed my passwords earlier today, mostly because I'd heard initial indications that the launcher had been hacked and compromised -- this before the DDOS announcement was made by CCP and services taken offline. I wasn't sure whether to take those hacking reports seriously. There was a lot of tinfoil flying around during the outage Better safe than sorry, and changing a password is an easy thing to do.

Now I'm taking those hacking reports more seriously. CCP put out their press release today concerning the outage, which included the following statement:
What we can now confirm is that a person was able to utilize a vulnerability in one of the back-end services that support the operation of the Tranquility server. This vulnerability has now been secured and thoroughly tested.
That is not language that describes a distributed denial of service attack. That sounds to me like something much different. I'm sure a DDOS did eventually happen, but what occurred first may have been an entirely different attack. As players, we may never know.

Onto the Goonswarm announcement, which I think is of benefit to all EVE Online players and sound advice:
Greetings Goons,

As you may be aware, CCP recently suffered a breach of their servers that resulted in EVE Offline living up to it's name for several hours.   While the scope of this breach is not yet known (nor do I believe Iceland has strong disclosure rules, unlike the EU proper, so we may never know) I would ** HIGHLY RECOMMEND ** that everybody take the following precautions ** IMMEDIATELY ** in light of this event.  These precautions include:
  • Monitor any credit card you may have provided to CCP for unusual activity, or better, cancel the card completely.
  • Change your EVE Online password.  If this password is the same as a password you use on any other site (BAD YOU!) then change those passwords as well and stop using overlapping passwords.
I would also strongly recommend switching away from utilizing CCP to bill your credit card, instead move entirely to PLEX and/or GTC which you can purchase from Amazon via links you can find on the on the forums or on TMC.

Thanks for your time.  This broadcast will be repeated a couple more times to cover all timezones.
I'm not trying to be alarmist, but for the safety of your own account, change your passwords. It is just good advice.
