[Poetic] My Travels Through PvP

I spent the first half of my EVE playing career either in EVE University, or going it solo, trying to find my place in EVE Online. My PvP activity while in EVE University was low, not because there was a lack of PvP opportunities in the organization, but because I found their fleets boring as hell. Large EVE University roams are a rigid affair. Comms are silent, more often than not, except for the voice of the FC and whoever he might be querying (scouts). Fly around, follow instructions, no chatter. I don't find those types of fleets all that much fun. So I started avoiding them, and did pretty much my own thing.
The first time I actually had fun in an EVE University fleet, it was a small-gang wolfpack roam with some friends. A lot of shooting-the-shit when nothing was happening, and serious business when we did find prey. I was already figuring out that EVE University wasn't the organization for me, but I think the casualness of those few wolfpacks drove home the point. The large fleets of E-Uni were a definite reflection on the organization as a whole ? very structured, very regimented, very rules oriented. I found that sort of play dull, very limiting, and not particularly captivating.
When I left EVE University, I floundered about for six months. Trying to find an area of the game that captured my attention. I spent a bit of time in lowsec with an EVE University buddy, trying out some solo PvP. That's about the point that my lossmail total became greater than my killmail total. I was a pretty terrible solo PvPer. Not too mention, I just didn't have the patience to go looking for solo PvP. It wasn't really my thing.
After that, I moved out to Stain, and played around in NPC nullsec for awhile. Mainly doing planetary interaction, subsisting on my own, and bookmarking the entire region. It was pretty dull stuff. I then joined a nullsec alliance, specifically En Garde, who were a pet alliance (or closely associated, you decide) with Against ALL Authorities. I wasn't really ready for a nullsec alliance, and didn't really feel like I had the time to commit to their many fleets and ops and such. After about two weeks, I left both En Garde and Stain.
I took part in Hulkageddon V with another buddy, Corelin. That was a lot of fun. (On our very first day, our crew stole two Orcas, the miner was multiboxing with the Orcas sitting their empty, next to his Hulks.) In the meanwhile, I also started talking with Hans Jagerblitzen. Faction warfare was getting some attention from CCP.
Faction warfare seemed to be the thing for me. My activity increased. I was enjoying the game a bit more. I was enjoying the PvP. I wasn't really enjoying Late Night Alliance. The "we are PvP gods" attitude was off-putting, and I was starting to find Hans annoying. We were fighting Fweddit a lot at the time, and I just found their attitude towards the game, not too mention their community, really appealing. So I left Late Night Alliance for I Whip My Slaves Back and Forth.
It was at this point that my activity in game soared. I was really enjoying the hell out of EVE Online. I always enjoyed the premise of the game, but never got a tonne of enjoyment from the game. If that makes any sense. The pure pleasure I was getting playing the game now, that's down entirely to Fweddit and the wonderful people in Fweddit.
But like all things, eventually you burn out. I wasn't burning out on Fweddit, but rather faction warfare itself. I was getting tired of the same tactics from enemies, the same grind for "sovereignty", the same red targets on the overview. I needed a change again, but without giving up on Fweddit. I'll always be Fweddit.
I'd been talking a bunch with folks like Xander Phoena, Jeg Elsker, Wartzilla and Zakn on Twitter. They are all in Gentleman's Agreement, one of the newer CFC coalition members. I liked them as people, which translated to my overall perception of Gents. So I did a bit of research and decided that I'd like to try out nullsec with Gentleman's Agreement, specifically Paxton Industries.
So, Poetic left Fweddit and joined Paxton Industries. I re-activated an alt and put her into Fweddit (like I said, I never want to break ties with the chikunz.)
Since joining the CFC, my activity has once again soared. The change in scenery has been really helpful in once again finding enjoyment in EVE. This might be a permanent arrangement. With an alt account in Fweddit and my main in the CFC, I think I now have found the recipe to always keep my interest in EVE high. If I get burned out in one area of the game, I can always return to the other quite easily. And I can still pop between the two as the mood strikes. I still chat with my Fweddit bros. I'm still doing CFC fleets regularly. (Heck, at the moment, I get the best of both worlds, CFC fleets with Fweddit bros.)
All is good. EVE is good. It might take some patience and a willingness to just try a bunch of different things, but eventually you can find what works perfectly for you in this game. EVE being what it is, being such a broad game, there are so many different ways for players to find their little niche.
