CCP Explorer, Mintchip, and Free Skill Points

So, CCP gave out another 50K skill points for the 24 hour DDOS downtime. This is probably the new state of things for CCP. Extending account time or giving out free skill points? One of those actions costs CCP money, the other costs them nothing.

I'm not too fussed about receiving the skill points. For all but the one alt, it's free skill points, even if I do lose a paid day on two of my three accounts (the Poetic account is a free media account, so I can never complain about time lost there.)

Now, if EVE were to go down for a week, I'd much rather have an extra week tacked onto my accounts than 350K skill points. For people that pay for their accounts with PLEX, I'm sure they would too. Of course, EVE going down for a week would be extremely unlikely.

For a single day lost, though, I suppose you can bitch about it from either side of the fence. Arguments can be made for either free skill points, or lost time tacked onto accounts. From CCP's perspective, whatever costs them the least amount of money for the least amount of player bitching is the route they're going to take, and hard to fault them on the reasoning.

Mintchip is now a CCP employee. She even got to keep the Mintchip name. CCP Mintchip. Which is unusual. CCP has always asked new employees to take on completely new identities. Mintchip has a huge following out on the internets. Her YouTube channel is quite popular. Tens of thousands of followers. So, from a marketing standpoint, probably a good move to let her keep the Mintchip monicker.

There's already a threadnaught welcoming her into the fold. Maybe not entirely welcoming. Mintchip has some history with the community. Good and bad.

Her job title is DUST 514 Community Representative. It is probably wise she will not be directly associated with EVE Online, considering some things she said about EVE Online back in April. She'd be a hard sell as an EVE representative.
@FunkyBacon I don't even want to play [EVE Online] anymore. I'm completely turned off to it at this point.  Sorry :(

@FunkyBacon It's my opinion.  I've been playing eve for 2+ years, and I've had good times, but a lot more bad than from any other medium.
What's surprising is that I didn't even know she was a first-person shooter gamer. I don't watch her YouTube videos often, but I don't recall her ever talking FPSes. She seemed more of an RTS and MMO gamer, the DOTAs and LOLs and SWTORs and WOW type games. I'm not quite sure what she brings to DUST 514 as a community representative, since I never got the impression she played much DUST (except out of some curiosity.) One wonders if her fanbase is even interested in FPSes.

I'm sure there's some legitimate marketing reason for the hire.

The Odyssey launch was a complete success for me. Much that could have gone wrong, did not. I logged in a couple hours ago and everything was a-okay. I know tonnes of people should be congratulated, but since CCP Explorer manages deployments, I'll just congratulate him on a job well done, and let him congratulate his entire team for me.

And hey, I had 41M SP yesterday. Today I have 47M SP. Can't be unhappy about that.
