CSM8 Status Report: Week fifty-three
Welcome to what is likely going to be my last weekly CSM8 status report!
Needless to say, CSM8 is already in the midst of transition of our duties to CSM9. Ali Aras, mynnna, and Xander Phoena seem to be taking charge on that score. There is now a CSM8/9 transition Skype channel and while we can't yet discuss NDA topics with CSM9 (because they have not yet signed their NDAs), we can start to brief them on some of the more sensitive non-NDA'ed items that are likely to come up in the first couple of weeks.
Because of this transition, Sugar Kyle, Xander, and mynnna have assured me that they will be continuing some form of frequent updates to all of you. Sugar's will be weekly. So unless something really remarkable happens during this first week of transition, I'm going to let CSM9 tell CSM9's story. ;-) Still, it will likely be useful to current and future CSM members to have this past week documented.
The week began for most of us with our travel plans. Because of the monument unveiling on the 30th, CCP Dolan was gracious enough to give all of the CSM members whose travel was paid for an extra day in Iceland so that we could be there for that unveiling. As a result, most of us landed on the 29th: a "recovery from jet-lag day" is typical. Ali set up an informal "goodbye to CSM8" dinner at Uno in Reykjavik for the evening of the 29th and most of the CSM members in town were there as well as eight or nine devs. It was a very nice, informal dinner and little if any "business" was discussed.
I've written on the monument unveiling already, as well as the CSM Panel on Fanfest day one. I'll write about the CSM Q&A on Fanfest day three as part of that post. The latter two activities were the only required attendance items on the schedules of the CSM members present. Other than that, we're allowed to experience Fanfest at our leisure! Other than this, CCP Manifest sent all of us an e-mail late on day two asking if any of us would be willing to be interviewed on day three. I myself read this e-mail too late to respond. Ali, mynnna, and Mike Azariah were also interviewed on EVE TV; other members of CSM8 may have been interviewed without my hearing about it.
Other than this, all of our contact with CCP devs is entirely informal and unscheduled. Since this was "so long for now" for me on the CSM, most of my contact with devs was telling so many of them how much I'd enjoyed working with them over the last year. As part of this process, I also delivered another of my famous hoodies to CCP Falcon as a thank you for all the crap I put him through over the Erotica 1 situation. As the omniscient overseer of EVE's Community team, I felt it appropriate that the caption on his hoodie be "EVE Illuminati". ;-)
Two other hoodies were awarded this week, but I'll talk about those when I talk about the CSM Q&A.
It's becoming traditional for the CSM9 election results to be announced as part of the CCP Presents keynote on the final day of Fanfest. The joke is that this is CCP's first opportunity to troll the incoming CSM for as long as possible... As I've already implied, I'm really pleased with the results! 11 out of 14 candidates I endorsed got in. 11 out of 14 candidates I predicted would win did. I'll have more to say about it when the full ballot results are published. I thought I might have a brief flash of regret when the winners were announced that I hadn't tried for a seat... but I didn't. I continue to be well-satisfied with my work on CSM8 and content to hand this important responsibility off to a new team.
Interestingly, with the last day of the next Fanfest scheduled for 21 March 2015, CSM9 will have the shortest CSM term since CSM4: only 46 weeks.
And then, as I've already said, transition started almost immediately! Last year, since so many of the CSM8 winners were attendance in Iceland, Dolan was able to give us NDA forms and get signatures from most of us right off. This year of the winners, only Ali, mynnna, Mike, and Steve Ronuken were physically present, I believe, and Ali had to leave early for personal reasons. So there will probably be a delay before CSM9 is under the NDA so that the documents can be e-mailed, signed, sent back, confirmed, et cetera. Several members of CSM8 had to go through this last year and the main effect is that they'll be slower to be added to the CSM/CCP Skype channels and slower to receive their EVE-O forum "CSM" tags and access to the private section of the forums.
After that, they'll have some reading to do. There are significant archives in both places, plus the CSM8 private archive that Trebor Daehdoow is giving them access to.
And that is all I can think of! Again, unless something really remarkable happens, this will be the last weekly update from me. I have one more post in me that will be tagged "CSM8": my final wrap-up post on my impressions of being on the CSM for the last year. After that, I'll be moving on to my occasional impressions of the work of CSM9!
