Will You Wait Three Years? Five Years?

Unless a subsystem is a hard blocker to other development (e.g., Crimewatch), CCP Games will not touch old legacy code if it determines the code "too hard" to fix. They won't touch the player-owned starbase (POS) code. They won't touch nullsec. They won't touch corporate roles.

They simply hope that players will hang around with EVE Online for the next three to five years, patiently waiting for this many-year roadmap to come to fruition. I'm predicting that Yurts are the eventual replacement for POSes. But that is still three years away, minimum. And this new space that Seagull keeps hinting at, accessible only via player-built stargates, will be the new replacement for nullsec.

As much as players keep insisting that nullsec needs to be fixed, when, since Incarna, has anybody heard CCP Games agree with that assessment? Never. CCP Games has remained entirely silent on the issue. They aren't going to touch nullsec mechanics, but to say so would be a death knell to the game. If EVE loses its nullsec audience, the rest of the game slowly follows. The majority of the players in EVE Online might not be playing in nullsec, but nullsec is the beating heart of the game.

In five years, maybe this new area of space will be fantastic, everything that people wanted nullsec to be. Should you wait those five years, shovelling money to CCP, on that hope and a prayer? And if you do wait, what happens to the current nullsec? Is it left forgotten? Becoming EVE Online's Molten Core 1 ? It's Blackwing Lair 1 ?

Why can't EVE Online have a vibrant and dynamic nullsec (it is anything but those two things currently) and some sort of new space five years down the road? Why is it one or the other? Why the push for new features, rather than fixing old features that players say they desperately want fixed?

Hey, maybe this new space down the road is terrible too. Why potentially keep piling up mistakes on top of each other? Maybe CCP fucks up Yurts, and they're as terrible as POSes are today? There's no particular guarantee that any of these new replacement features are going to be a panacea.

Seems to me, there's less risk in fixing current features ? features that players are already invested in ? rather than hoping that new features will strike their fancy.

Everybody (including myself in the past) writing articles on how to fix nullsec or POSes or whatever other large complex system you can think of. Stop doing it. You're wasting your time and energy. That's not the road CCP wants to travel.

Hell, man, CCP is wasting an entire Rubicon team redesigning the character selection screen. They just want a prettier character selection screen. End of story 2 . Was the functionality of that screen somehow deficient? Nope. But they're wasting an entire team on it nonetheless. Priorities, after all.

Maybe I'm wildly wrong. I do encourage CCP Games to prove me wrong, though.

In with the new. Ignore the old (if the work is too hard.) That's the development mantra.

1 Molten Core and Blackwing Lair are old raids from World of Warcraft, pre any expansions. They became unused content the moment the first expansion, Burning Crusade, was released.

2 This will not lead to character-switching without having to close down the client. CCP Explorer has already confirmed this. The reason why? It is too hard to fix. Does that sound familiar?
