Fit of the Week: Odyssey Cerberus
This was supposed to be the Eagle. I really wanted it to be the Eagle. And oh sure, a 250mm Railgun Eagle isn't bad. With Caldari Navy Uranium, it does about 375-400 DPS out to 70km. It's nothing to sneeze at. And the ship tanks quite nicely. But there are sooo many other ship classes in that attack profile at that range that I was kind of hoping for something that would blow me away a little. The Eagle kind of falls apart because the damage doesn't go up very much as the range contracts. At 40km, it's bested in nearly every particular by a shield-fit Omen Navy Issue: cheaper, faster, more agile, better tracking, same damage, and a nice drone bay. And ONIs don't require HAC 5. And their DPS goes up as range contracts. So yeah, no FOTW Eagle just yet.
Meanwhile, the Cerberus got quite a buff:

Cerbs used to be smirked at a little for PvP applications: they were a bit thin, a bit slow, and their DPS just didn't measure up to any number of competitors. A goodly number of those problems are now solved. The Cerb is still slow, but this fit does 450 DPS out to about 60-65km. Compared to the Eagle, it's faster, its lock time is better, and you at least have a few drones. It's more or less a better ship in pretty much every way, the missing element being the Eagle's tough tank. But I've never quite gotten the mix of strong tank in a skirmish ship. If something's tough enough to kill a 45k EHP ship, it's tough enough to kill a 65k EHP ship. Skirmish ships under threat should be warping off and warping back, maintaining mobility in the face of a superior enemy rather than sitting there trying to take it. And the Cerb does this much better than the Eagle thanks to its superior speed and agility.
The big advantage, though, is how the damage scales as range closes. 450 DPS at 65km becomes 600 DPS at 40km becomes 700 DPS against battleships out to overheated and bonused point range. That's the scary that the Eagle is missing right now.
EDIT (12/Sep/2013): Sorry, I should have been more specific for newer players. It's 450 DPS with Javelin missiles, 600 DPS with faction missiles, and 700 DPS with Rage missiles. Split your launchers into two groups of three and as your targets close or you close with them, reload first one set of three with the closer range missiles, then the other set.
The other nice thing about the Cerb is that it's an easy, straight-forward fit with good skills. Tank is relatively minimal as befits a skirmish ship, but is built around a couple of meta LSEs, traditional shield rigs, an Invul, and a Damage Control. If your skills are weak, you'll probably have to trade the DC for a Power Diagnostic System to close the grid gap. This will hurt your resists, particularly against lasers which are the Cerb's nemesis.
Flying this ship couldn't be very much easier: maintain high transversal, hit F1. I've left drones off the fit because of the small drone bay, but should be set by your FC based on the number of ships you're bringing along. A lot of FCs will want Hornet EC-300 drones, with a small gang of Cerbs able to provide good coverage. Oh! And carry Crash Booster of some type. The Cerb really benefits from them.
The Cerb is never going to be as flexible as the Ishtar (we'll get to how good the Ishtar is) but a big advantage it brings to the table is versatility in fitting. Pull the HAMs, fit HMLs, trade the point for a Sebo, and you're doing 400 DPS out to 140km. Pull the HAMs, fit Rapid Light Missile Launchers, and you're doing the same 400 DPS, but this time you're firing Light Scourge Fury missiles into frigates, destroyers, and dictors out to 65km or so with excellent explosion velocity and explosion radius. You barely have to touch the other mods, which makes the Cerb really versatile depending on your or your FC's needs. Just keep the launchers for all three configurations handy.
If the Caldari build their ships around basic functionality, there's hardly a better model of this in the game than the new Cerberus. Now if only the same philosophy could be applied to its uglier brother...
All Fits of the Week are intended as general guidelines only. You may not have the skills needed for this exact fit. If you do not, feel free to adjust the fit to suit to meet your skills, including using meta 3 guns and "best named" defenses and e-war. Ships can also be adjusted to use faction or dead-space modules depending on the budget of the pilot flying it. Each FOTW is intended as a general guide to introduce you to concepts that will help you fit and to fly that particular type of ship more aggressively and well.
