Choosing the Right Microwarpdrive
So many different microwarpdrives (MWDs), but which one to choose for your fit. And when should you shell out the big bucks?
Every microwarpdrive will give you the same speed boost, whether you spend 70K ISK or 70M ISK. Where they all differ are in things like fitting requirements, capacitor usage, and signature radius bloom.
Feel free to look over the following Google spreadsheet (direct link available at bottom of this tutorial.) There are tabs for each of the three microwarpdrive size classes. 1MN for frigates and destroyers. 10MN for cruisers and battlecruisers. 100MN for battleships (and some cruiser- and battlecruiser-sized hulls.)
Powergrid: A ship fitting value. If you can't fit one of the 15MW microwarpdrives, you're probably shit out of luck. That's as low as they go.
CPU: Another ship fitting value. A lot more variability here. In the 1MN range of MWDs, the Limited is popular due to it requiring the least amount of CPU, 23tf.
Capacitor Bonus: All MWDs reduce capacitor capacity. If you're specifically building towards cap stability, a module with a higher meta level might do the trick for you, since they don't require as much capacitor capacity.
Activation Cost: This is the amount of capacitor that is expended on every MWD cycle. Again, if you're hoping for cap stability, several of the higher meta level modules have reduced activation costs. The High Speed Maneuvering skill wil reduce the capacitor use of MWDs. An Eifyr and Co. 'Rogue' High Speed Maneuvering HS- implant will reduce the capacitor use of MWDs.
Signature Radius Bonus: Don't be fooled by the word bonus. An active MWD makes your ship appear much larger to the electronic systems of other ships, making you quicker to target, easier to hit, easier to damage (especially to missiles and bombs.) Halo implants will reduce signature radius.
Speed: As mentioned earlier, all MWDs give the same velocity bonus, but the Acceleration Control skill will increase this value. The Navigation skill will increase base speed. The Eifyr and Co. 'Rogue' Navigation NN- implants and Snake implants will increase base ship speed.
If you have ISK to throw around, the Core- and Gist- modules are especially useful. The Core modules are particularly useful on ships with a lot of CPU, but not quite as much powergrid. The Gist modules are great on ships with lots of powergrid, but not as much CPU.
In general, when looking at the non-faction/deadspace modules (meta-level five or less), it's a better value to use a meta level 1 - 4 MWD over a meta level 5 (tech 2) module.

Want to play around with the spreadsheet yourself? Here is a direct link. From the File menu, select Make a Copy to copy the spreadsheet into your own Google Docs account. Now you can sort columns at your leisure.
