Do You Want Some Nerdcore To Go Along With Your Gaming?

The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets. Nerdcore. Cthulhupunk.

When I was living in Vancouver, I used to roleplay with a couple of the band members from The Thickets. Dungeons and Dragons. Sometimes the lead singer's own superhero campaign, World Wildlife Federation of Justice, with such characters as Hypnopotamus, Dupligator, Haardvark, Dr. Gnucleus, Rhinosferatu, Crackerjackal, and Dynamole.

Two of the band members also wrote the roleplaying game,  Spaceship Zero, published by Green Ronin. I believe it is out-of-print now, but it was a fun little game.

The band members are nerds to the core. Plus, they play some good music.

Their live concerts are especially great, especially when you see a complete band of Elder Gods walk onto the stage and pick up their instruments. Their costuming is fantastic. They also have great charisma and showmanship in front of a crowd. They've played gaming conventions all over North America, such as PAX West, Cthulhupalooza, and most recently at NecronomiCon in Massachusetts.

They have four albums to their name, Cthulhu Strikes Back, Great Old Ones, Spaceship Zero, and The Shadow Out Of Tim. All but Spaceship Zero are heavily Cthulhu-themed.

You can also find them on Rockband and Guitar Hero.

Here's some music.

First up is 20 Minutes of Oxygen. The story of a guy trapped outside his spaceship with only twenty minutes of oxygen remaining. As his end nears, he daydreams about going into the past to warn a younger version of himself not to make the same mistake. (A Hilti is a brand of power tool.) From the album Spaceship Zero.

Next up is a fan favourite. The Math Song. An equation put to music. From the album Spaceship Zero.

Burrow Your Way To My Heart from Cthulhu Strikes Back. A love song to a parasite.

And from The Shadow Out of Tim (a Cthulhu concept album about a marine biologist on the hunt for the great squid) is Operation: Get The Hell Out Of Here!

If you were not familiar with The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets until today, I hope you enjoyed the introduction. All albums are available on iTunes and Amazon.
