My Strange Fascinaton with Dinsdale Pirannha
Dinsdale Pirannha is a bit of mystery to me. He plays the game out of some small personal corporation. He has a spotty killmail record, with no recent activity. He may be quite active in the game doing PvE and industry, or he might barely play at all. Hard to tell. There are no PvE API calls one can make.
Everything I know about Dinsdale comes from forum comments. He's a frequent commenter to this blog, as well as others. I've seen his comments on Ripard Teg's Jester's Trek. I've read his comments on Crossing Zebra posts.
As kooky as he is, I also find him amusing. His comments can turn a frown upside-down.
What fascinates me is his narrative.
Null sec has evolved (devolved?) into an industry. It is all about the RMT. Nothing more, nothing less.
Every comment is always the same. He spins the same story on every blog to which he comments. He's a conspiracy theorist, through and through.
Congrats null sec cartels, your control over Eve is complete. Let the RMT flow.
Goons are his usual target.
The guys that run the goon finances are quite sophisticated, and are quite capable of taking on most roles on Wall Street. They are also greedy, and basically evil.
But he also points to other nullsec entities as well. He doesn't want to appear overly Goon obsessed.
The NC reserves likely ended up as RMT income for their leadership.
Yes. The RMT (real-money transfer) conspiracy. Every nullsec coalition is engaged in RMT on a massive scale, according to Dinsdale. He never deviates from this narrative. Even when he writes a reasonaby cogent post on TiDi and large scale battles, he doesn't forget to include a paragraph that links it all back to RMT.
Now, did CCP achieve their goal of creating a ton of free advertising for the game? Absolutely. The event was picked up by a ton of mainstream media outlets.
But did CCP actually do themselves any favours by displaying a game at 10% Tidi? I watched MadAni's feed, and he did his best to create a silk purse out of a sow's ear (his pleas for a new computer notwithstanding), but bottom line, for anyone new to the game, the battle was incomprehensible, and worse, boring.
If CCP truly thinks that advertising that snail pace travesty as the best that Eve has to offer, then wow, just wow.
More and more I am convinced that all of CCP believe "null sec cartels are the future of the game, and we must do everything in our power to allow them free reign, including turning a blind eye to their botting and RMT ops.
The conspiracy doesn't stop just at nullsec cartels. His ever-expanding plot posits that CCP is also complicit in the RMT conspiracy.
CCP figures it is good for business for this kind of RMT oligopoly to exist.
His reasoning is, of course, all very "logical".
Logic indicates that the reasons CCP turns a blind eye to this are kickbacks, or they harbour an absolute terror that goons would somehow destroy Eve if CCP tried to stop the RMT operations.
He doesn't just claim CCP's active support for RMT, but he names various employees as fundamental to its continuance. CCP Soundwave is a popular name to bring up.
To think goons like soundwave are not taking a piece of that pie as compensation for improving those income streams, it strains all credibility, especially when you factor in the goon culture.
CCP Fozzie is another name appearing with increasing frequency.
Pandemic Legion Fozzie is no star. He is a null sec zealot working for the null sec cartels to weaken any resistance against them. This is all about strengthening the RMT cartels' positions in the game.
A lot of funny stuff. He seems to genuinely believe it. Quite passionately so.
I don't even think Dinsdale is a troll. He rarely responds to anybody who might want to argue with him. Trolls look for internet fights. Dinsdale is just looking at getting his message across, as frequently and through as many venues as possible.
There's certainly RMT taking place in EVE Online. Just not at the massive scale that Dinsdale imagines. Not to mention, including CCP into his narrative is straight up loony. RMT hurts CCP's bottom-line. Every amount of ISK bought off the black market is a PLEX or GTC (game time code) not purchased from CCP Games. It's in CCP's interests to stop RMT as best they can. We certainly saw that in the last couple years, with CCP Sreegs massive bans and seizures on RMT botting operations.
If Dinsdale ends up reading this, maybe post a comment explaining why you play EVE Online. The game obviously causes you a great deal of frustration. You have so little faith in the people developing the game, why keep paying and playing? I'm honestly curious.
