The War in Fountain - The Importance of J5A-IX

J5A-IX was the CFC's Normandy. It was the CFC's bridgehead into Fountain.

Of course, once the CFC did take it (through some luck, due to an unfortunate mistake by Test Alliance) Test & Pals shrugged. "Non-essential system," they said. And this after many all-out efforts and vows to defend J5A to the last Rifter.

I suppose one could imagine, on June 8 1944, Berlin telegraphing a similar sentiment to London and Washington: "Non-essential coastline."

The question then arose: "Why is J5A-IX important?" That's simple really: it was the gateway into Fountain from safe CFC space. The CFC's jumpbridge network ends at B-DBYQ. B-D is eleven light years from J5A. Whereas it's a single jumpgate, it's too far to bridge via Titan. So J5A becomes a chokepoint. It was the one system in Fountain that had to be traversed by CFC forces.

Test & Pals had to defend J5A tooth and nail if they wanted to stop the CFC from fanning out into Fountain. With the system in their hands, it means that bridging operations have many options. Anything within seven light years of J5A can now be reached and attacked with ease. It will become much more difficult for Test & Pals to defend Fountain, because CFC offensives can spearhead into any number of systems. Whereas J5A was the focal point of the entire Fountain campaign, there no longer exists that focal point. J5A was a necessary target for the CFC, nothing could affect that assessment. Now the CFC can pick and choose targets in Fountain, they can weigh intel and make decisions accordingly. With J5A in their hands, they now have options.

Some asked, "Why not simply stage from elsewhere, via a system from which you could bridge into Fountain?" Well, that would have meant traversing and staging out of hostile territory. The route to B-DBYQ is relatively safe. It is firmly, solidly CFC territory. Travel logistics, in the form of a jump bridge network, are already in place. Moving thousands of players, thousands of ships, via hundreds of travel man hours, is a relatively simple task when you have your logistical pieces already in place. To give a Civil War analogy, to attack Fountain from any location other than B-DBYQ would have been the akin to the Union attacking Shiloh from Alabama, rather than their much safer route through Tennessee.

Of course, even with J5A in CFC control, this doesn't mean that the CFC's task is easier. J5A will ultimately give the CFC more tactical options, but the fight will continue to be difficult. The defenders are a very motivated lot. Before J5A can even begin to be utilized properly, the surrounding systems have to be secured. So far Test & Pals are putting up excellent and continued resistance.

Sehr interessant.
