Snakes and Ladders

Snakes and Ladders is a game that is played until the age of five or six, at which point the child begins to realize that they are not in control of the outcome of the game. The game is ruled by random chance, it lacks any skill component.

There's a good reason why there are no Elo ratings for Snakes and Ladders, why there are no worldwide ranked players. There is nothing a player can do to control their fate in the game. It would be like proclaiming somebody a world champion lottery player just because they won some money.

I commented on the exploration hacking mini-game when it was first shown at Fanfest 2013 by CCP Soundwave. I was unimpressed by the demonstration.
The crypto-thing could be cool. As demonstrated it looked downright pointless and boring. I'll reserve judgement on this, of course. But if it is a cool and fun feature, shouldn't it have looked cool and fun in the demonstration? In my opinion, it did not.
It looked like nothing more than an exercise in mouse clicking. There was no strategy demonstrated. For an MMO that prides itself on its complexity, I wondered why this was an appropriate mini-game for EVE Online, and not some children's introduction to cyberpunk.

I've been following the mini-game since it was released to SiSi. Granted, I've yet to play it, because I can't be bothered with SiSi, but I have read many posts on player experiences and watched more than a couple of YouTube videos.

I would be thrilled if someone could tell me where the player skill is in this mini-game, where the strategy lies, because it looks like nothing more than a game of Snakes and Ladders. You click around. You hope more good stuff happens than bad. You hope to find the system core in as few clicks as possible. Random chance seems to be the only factor in this game. If you have small children, they'll probably be thrilled by this. Adults, though?

This crypto-game was probably prototyped last year (I hope to hell it was, I hope this wasn't some idea spawned and then moved into development during January of this year.) It was probably a helluva lot more interesting as a game in that original pitch and prototype. But given the length of the EVE Online development cycle, that original idea probably got cut, shaved and chopped down to what we have now. Given that CCP does not revisit systems anytime soon, as long as they are functioning properly, this mini-game is here to stay for a long while and in its present and not particularly interesting state.
