How To Receive a 90-Day Forum Ban

Rule number one. Don't try to be funny, because people in Iceland have no sense of humour.

There is this thread, where CCP are inviting people to come party with them in Los Angeles. During E3, I believe. (I'm linking to eve-search, because CCP have "cleaned" up the original thread on their forums.)

Part way through the first page, Vincent Athena complains that a 9PM start is too late for him. By 9PM he's already thinking about bedtime:

"Why so late? I'm in the LA area and would like to go, but I get up at 5 to 6 AM and by 9 PM I am normally thinking about bed.

"Will you be around at any earlier time for us morning people?"

That struck me as pretty funny. I'm sure he was being serious and such as all that, but of all the things to complain about, a 9PM start for a dev party in Los Angeles?

A lot of people started poking fun at him. None of it struck me as malicious in the least. Just good-natured ribbing. I added the following to the fray:

"I understand your dilemma. It's either head out to meet some CCP devs, or stay at the senior center playing shuffleboard and listening to old Sinatra albums.

"Perhaps you can convince a few of the devs to meet you for a 3PM dinner at your favourite buffet?"

CCP has categorized it as a personal attack. Seriously. A personal attack. This is where I type a W. A T. And then an F. I've seen actual attacks go ignored and unpunished on the forums in the past, and yet CCP decides this is crossing a line?

So, that comment gets me a 90 day forum ban. Granted, I've had some bans in the past, but I've never brought them up publicly, because CCP could make a case (although weak in some instances) for the ban. This one seems fucked-up stupid and unreasonable, and there's little solid ground CCP's standing on calling this a personal attack. Poking fun at somebody, by comparing them to a senior citizen, is now considered a personal attack? This is now equivalent to calling somebody a Nazi or a fuckball or a shit-eating parasite?

I'm getting the distinct impression that punishments at CCP are meted out based on how well some forum cop's day is going.

I'd like to know if Two Step got a ban for the following comment (because if not, then there's something wrong with the CCP forum cop system):

"Perhaps your parents will let you stay up a little later just this one time?"

That's on par, if not slightly worse, than my comment. (If either comment can even be described in terms such a "worse." Both are mild ribbing.)

I'm not going to bother challenging the decision. I've done so in the past, and whoever is higher up the ladder is not going to reverse the decision of an underling. It creates a piss-poor working environment if bosses are overruling the actions of their subordinates.

But as an illustration for the future, perhaps CCP forum cops should be trained to recognize a malicious personal attack, from one that's just good-natured ribbing.
