My Problem With The DUST 514 Neocom App
The DUST 514 Neocom application (as seen at Fanfest) is very pretty. It looks very functional. It looks like at lot of love and attention went into developing it.
My problem isn't the application itself, it's the platform upon which it was developed.
For me, mobile means convenience. It means one device with the ability to service all of my applications needs. A phone. A calendar and scheduling tool. A GPS and maps tool. A camera. A device with which to access the internet. And my email. A game platform. A social media tool. Mobile, for me, does not mean separate devices for different applications. Once I need more than a single device, the convenience of mobile is lost.
I'm sure the Playstation Vita is a fine device. I'm sure as a gaming platform it serves its purpose well. If the Playstation Vita is the only device on which to conveniently access my DUST 514 accounts (and the Neocom is not even a game), such that I have to carry one along with my Galaxy Nexus, then it is defeating the purpose of mobile convenience. If the Vita were able to do everything that my Android device could, then it would be a device worth owning, perhaps worth switching to from Android.
But the Vita is not a replacement for my Android. It is not a replacement for your iPhone. It's simply another device that you have to carry around with you, and it's a device that does nothing that an iPhone or an Android cannot (well, except double as a Playstation 3 controller, and even that may be changing.)
I'm sure developing the DUST 514 Neocom application for the Playstation Vita has further endeared CCP to Sony, but I hope that once the Vita app is released, that CCP will immediately begin porting the DUST 514 Neocom application to Android and iOS systems. Or at least open up CREST and let the community develop the app for those platforms.
Mobile should be about the convenience of a single device, not having to lug several devices around. The DUST 514 Neocom application is not so special that it could not run equally well on Android or iPhone. I hope CCP realizes this, and understands that their application is not so special that it is going to convince thousands of DUST players to rush out to buy a Vita, not when they already own perfectly functional and viable Android and iOS devices.
