King of Lowsec and Lost in EVE
CCP seems really good about laying down rules and then "clarifying" them after the fact. It should come as no surprise that there's a bit of controversy surrounding CCP's King of Lowsec contest.
Snuff Box, of Urine Alliance, were quite sure they had won. I'd gather they were tracking killboards, and did not see anybody come close to their total ISK value of kills. Not even their closest rival Pandemic Legion.
Yet, when all was said and done, CCP announced Pandemic Legion as the winners. Maybe Snuff Box miscalculated their kills. A grave error in addition? Is there a reason why Snuff Box was so wrong? Or were some of their kills invalidated?
What we do know is that Snuff Box killed a lot of CCP employees during the contest. And we know that CCP decided not to include CCP kills as part of their calculation. The problem is that the rules did not exclude CCP employee kills.
Specifically, the rules state:
- Whoever receives the final blow will be credited with the value of kill.
- The ISK value will be equivalent to that on the kill report.
- Only kills made in low security space (0.1 to 0.4 systems) will count.
- Only kills made after the server comes up on May 5th and before it goes down on May 6th will count.
- All kills which adhere to these guidelines will count, regardless of the circumstances surrounding them.
I've bolded the all-important rule. All kills that adhere to the guidelines. And the guidelines don't discount any particular type of kill, including kills of CCP employees on celebratory roams.
Maybe Urine Alliance did win. Maybe CCP didn't want the hassle of dealing with an alliance without a logo, even though the rules state: "In the event the winning alliance does NOT have an in-game logo, we will figure something out." Maybe CCP didn't want to figure something out. Maybe CCP didn't want Urine Alliance flying high and proud over CCP headquarters.
We'll never really know. But, it would be damned nice if CCP could create a set of rules and adhere to them, not changing and adding rules after the fact. It would be fantastic if players knew what was legal and not-legal before a contest began, and not given that information afterwards.

So Lost in EVE is turning off the mic. Laying down the headset. Shuttering the doors. The final podcast, #85, is now available.
Although I wasn't a fan of the podcast specifically, I was certainly a fan of their community support and what they offered to the community. Their passion for the game was evident through their broadcasts. They've been an EVE Online institution since 2009. So it really is sad that they're closing the doors. No more Jade. No more Rundle. Hundreds and hundreds (thousands?) of people, they'll be losing their connection to news and events outside of their own sphere of play. And that will be a shame.
Lost in EVE has gone through previous cycles of inactivity. Their fans can maybe hold out hope that this shutdown will not be permanent, that perhaps the podcasting bug will again bite Jade sooner rather than later. Jeg Elsker, of Crossing Zebras, has already offered to host the podcast MP3s on his server, which is a kind gesture and indicative of the community lending a helping hand to each other.
Whatever happens, to all those involved with Lost in EVE, best of luck, and may we see you again in the future.
