CSM8's First Order of Business

CSM8 really needs to understand where CCP wanted to head, initially, with Odyssey. What we're seeing with this current expansion (and I find it to be underwhelming) is apparently not where CCP originally wanted to go.

Alekseyev Karrde, in a recent article at TMDC, wrote:
Then we had a meeting going over what might be coming in the next expansion which was so jarringly out of touch with our expectations that every CSM in attendance was sort of speechless, left asking each other if we all actually heard what we just heard.
Unless CCP has some sort of fucked up NDA that disallows information during CSM7's term being passed onto CSM8, then it is incumbent upon CSM8 to draw as much information out of the previous CSM as possible. More importantly, to draw that information from as many sources as possible, especially sources who have proven that they're more concerned about the game and less concerned about protecting CCP's reputation. Idealists versus apologists.

Alekseyev Karrde has proven that he's a straight-talker. He's never been apologetic of CCP when they've made their mistakes. Two Step should be another CSM7 member they talk with. Although his activity was much lower than Alekseyev's during the term, he too has proven himself a straight-talker, more concerned with the health and longevity of the game than with protecting CCP from criticisms and ridicule. I would even include Kelduum into the Aleks and Two Step category, someone with a passion for EVE Online, less of a passion for CCP. These three people -- Aleks, Two Step, Kelduum -- they're no Hans Jagerblitzens or Seleenes. You want an accurate accounting of CSM7's term, then it is necessary to draw information from those three.

Certainly CSM8 should talk with the Hans' and the Seleenes, but these individuals have shown that they're more interested in protecting their relationship with CCP than with protecting the game, thus the likelihood of white-washing missteps will be far greater. "Yes, CCP's original vision for Odyssey was mildly out of step with our expectations, but in their defense ..."

As players, we'll never know what bizarre out-of-touch plans CCP had for Odyssey, but CSM8 should certainly learn, in great detail, what those plans were. Fully aware, they can more effectively watch for signs of CCP straying down the wrong road. More knowledge can only help them do their job better, help them help us as players of this great and wonderful internet spaceship game.
