Fit of the Week: Suicide Catalysts
In the interest of some balance, I thought it would be amusing to post fits for the two most commonly-used suicide gank Catalysts. First, the T1 version:
[Catalyst, Suicide T1]
Magnetic Field Stabilizer I
Magnetic Field Stabilizer I
Magnetic Field Stabilizer I
J5b Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I
Supplemental Scanning CPU I, Scan Resolution Script
Light Neutron Blaster I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S
Light Neutron Blaster I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S
Light Neutron Blaster I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S
Light Neutron Blaster I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S
Light Neutron Blaster I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S
Light Neutron Blaster I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S
Light Neutron Blaster I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S
Light Neutron Blaster I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S
Small Hybrid Burst Aerator I
Small Hybrid Collision Accelerator I
[empty rig slot]
This is the basic starting fit, and does between 600 and 700 alpha every two seconds or so, for about 280 to 350 DPS. DPS will start low but rise dramatically and quickly as your Gunnery skills increase. This is one reason Catalysts are favored for this kind of work since the hybrid and destroyer buffs. If you haven't trained Weapon Upgrades (and if you're doing this with an alt, you probably haven't), you'll have to do without one of the mid-slots, most likely the scram. My advice for alts: skip training Weapon Upgrades entirely and instead go for T2 guns. You can't really gank alone in this ship, so let someone with better skills handle the scram for you. The Sebo will cut your lock time to one second or so.
You can go with meta mid-slot items if you like. They're sometimes cheaper than T1. "Cheaper" is the important thing: since the ship is guaranteed to die, go with whatever components you can get for the lowest cost. You don't need to load the guns fully with ammo, either. You'll live 25 seconds or so under absolutely ideal conditions, which is 12 cycles times eight rounds for 96 rounds total. In higher security systems, you can carry even less. Make sure it's faction ammo though, for the extra damage.
Flying this ship couldn't be simpler, particularly if the target is an AFK miner. When you undock, group all eight guns and set your "keep at range" distance to 1100 meters or so. Do the latter by right-clicking the keep at range button on the Selected Item dialog and typing in the distance. Warp to the target, click the keep at range button, and when the target range drops to 1100 meters, hit F1. When your ship explodes, warp your pod off. Easy.
Once you're practiced at getting your pod away, spring for some implants. The Eifyr and Co. 'Gunslinger' Surgical Strike SS-903 is a good call, relatively cheap at about 20 million, and fits with Cybernetics II skill. Use the SS-901 instead if you don't want to spend that much. Pair it with a Zainou 'Deadeye' Small Hybrid Turret SH-603 in slot 6. Those are dirt cheap and only require Cybernetics I.
Here's the T2 version of the ship:
[Catalyst, Suicide T2]
Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
J5b Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I
Supplemental Scanning CPU I, Scan Resolution Script
Light Ion Blaster II, Void S
Light Ion Blaster II, Void S
Light Ion Blaster II, Void S
Light Ion Blaster II, Void S
Light Ion Blaster II, Void S
Light Ion Blaster II, Void S
Light Ion Blaster II, Void S
Light Ion Blaster II, Void S
Small Hybrid Burst Aerator I
Small Hybrid Collision Accelerator I

Same tactics, same everything else with this ship. But I'd recommend a touch longer range, maybe 1800 meters or so. Void ammo doesn't track as well as CNAM and the extra few hundred meters will help if the target gets lucky. Fitting for the T2 guns, ironically enough, is significantly easier. Alpha is 880 or so every 1.6 to 1.8 seconds, for 500 to 550 DPS. You might be able to play a bit with a mix of Ions and Neutrons but it's probably not worth it. You'll need about 120 rounds of Void ammo under ideal conditions, again less if security status is high.
You'll probably have among the better skills in the group, so count on having to do the scram yourself. No rush, though... as long as the target isn't moving when you get ready to fire, the scram can be set to F2. As one of the leaders in the group, you should also be the one advising the rest of your group about CONCORD response times. Here's a great blog post on the subject that I linked to last year that you can refer the rest of the group to.
Tomorrow, as a bonus FOTW, I'll mention one amusing way of countering these tactics. In the meantime, happy ganking!
All Fits of the Week are intended as general guidelines only. You may not have the skills needed for this exact fit. If you do not, feel free to adjust the fit to suit to meet your skills, including using meta 3 guns and "best named" defenses and e-war. Ships can also be adjusted to use faction or dead-space modules depending on the budget of the pilot flying it. Each FOTW is intended as a general guide to introduce you to concepts that will help you fit and to fly that particular type of ship more aggressively and well.
