Nice problem to have
So, we got some rather surreal news today. Or at least it felt surreal to me: Fanfest is sold out.
From time to time, you might notice that my output around here goes down a little bit or I might even (gasp!) miss a day in my posting. Usually, this means that I'm on a business trip to somewhere. I don't talk about them because I don't talk about my work on this blog. The only reason I mention it now was because I am on this business trip and it's kind of germane to this story. Right before I left home, I was making the final family logistical arrangements to attend Fanfest myself this year. But there wasn't going to be time to finish making those arrangements before I had to leave so I set them aside thinking, "OK, no problem, there's still plenty of time. I'll take care of it the Saturday after I get home." My plan was to take screenshots of my various travel arrangements and post them on the blog as the "announcement" I was coming. I wanted time to have a little fun with that part of it. But again, there was plenty of time, right? So I started my business trip.
And then this morning, logging into one of my accounts at the hotel I'm staying at to add a skill to a queue before my first meeting this morning, I was a little nonplussed to see an announcement on the log-in screen that there were only 100 tickets to Fanfest left. "Er well, I have to go to work..." I thought to myself, "but maybe I can make my final arrangements remotely when I get back to the hotel tonight?" Only that plan was also a non-starter because apparently only a couple of hours after CCP posted that announcement on the log-in screen, those final 100 tickets sold out.
So congratulations to those of you who are going to Reyk for this year's Fanfest... but I guess I'm not going to be joining you.
And I can't help but feeling really strange about it. I honestly feel a bit like Bartleby and Loki, trying to buy a ticket to New Jersey only to be told that New Jersey is sold out and that next time, I shouldn't "underestimate the staggering drawing power of the Garden State."
Wait... what? Come back here and say that again! WallyWorld is closed?!
Congrats also to CCP, because this is surely a nice problem to have, but it's kind of an odd problem to have too, isn't it? It made me honestly curious how the upper limit of Fanfest attendees was set. Hotel rooms in Reyk? Airplane capacity? Number of people that the Harpa can accommodate? A little bit of research netted me the information that the latter seems to be the bottleneck: the Harpa can accommodate 1800 people. But the advertisements for Fanfest centered around joining "a thousand" EVE fans for Fanfest, which now makes me curious about how many Fanfest tickets have been sold. That information is obviously a bit tougher to come by. Oh well.
Anyway, looks like I'll be watching the stream again this year. That makes me sad. Maybe I'll buy a BB gun and hold John Candy hostage? Nah, guess not. I'll see about starting my planning a little earlier next year.
